We hear the term OEE used around the world and every single day in the realm of continuous improvement for total “Overall Equipment Effectiveness”.   But do we know what it is and why we should be measuring against it?   Before we get into exactly OEE is and what a valid OEE strategy looks like, let’s review the benefits of OEE for your business.

OEE sheds light on where to effectively apply resources maximizing profit potential in the planning and budgeting process.  Leaders can exist anywhere in the organization so creating transparency in performance, and also lack of performance, elevates how to allocate resources and plan for the future.  As a measure of productivity through technology and machinery, OEE uniformly connects a network of machines, reducing critical areas of waste and redundancy.   When measuring OEE the result is vital visibility, across the operations.

After you have the right solutions in place, you will want to incorporate OEE as part of your overall management process. Every process that can be counted linearly should be measured against OEE. Start with a problematic area, implement OEE technology and set a strategy, make the changes, see the improvements, and expand it into the other areas of your business.
